Calcalist, an Israeli financial newspaper, published that Modu’s employees were asked to deposit their Nokia phones and start using the new modu devices from the actual production line that is used for the launch.
After the many issues with the different operators, Modu will supposedly launch their device with several basic jackets this month in Israeli operator Cellcom.
Modu refused to comment an action which raises suspicion.
We are sure they are very cautious after the previous disappointments but it was said that Modu will do the advertisement for the launch and no TV or newspapers ads were seen yet.

[update 07.14.2009] We got information of “the launch” and here are the full details:

  • Next week Modu will have their a closed launch party for Modu employees only.
  • The launch will be a soft launch with no advertisement at all on either side Cellcom nor Modu.
  • The devices will not be marketed and only a limited number of devices will be introduced as quite as they can do it.
  • No information about the pricing of the device.

The information also published on TheMarker which also added that Modu signed a distribution agreement with a Philippine entity for approximately 38$ Million US.

Now that is the meaning of being cautious after you got burnt too many times. We wish them good luck and hope to get the first 3G touch devices they release.

Is Modu Modufying? |

It was back in January this year when Modu Mobile first revealed the video teaser, and two weeks after that release, the big announcement was made. Modu even brought a whole plane full of the start-up employees for a one day visit in 3GSM Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Everything was bright and promising for Modu.
Modu Mobile was (and still is) a big promise/potential. Its revolutionary concept, a modular mobile phone with “Jackets” and “Mates” that change its purpose utilizing its mobile abilities and its memory. There were disappointments that the first generation will not be a 3G phone but still, it was obvious that Modu’s product has the potential to lead a revolution of a lightweight basic unit that connects and corresponds with other devices.

Almost a year later and the first modular phone’s future is unclear. Here are some developments that from our perspective show there are serious problems in Modu, problems that have a bad effect on one of the biggest promises of the Israeli and mobile market.

Modu

Layoffs- In just two week, the company fired in two cycles 100 workers, and some executives. That’s about 25% of the company working staff.
Do not get me wrong, layoffs in this time can also project managerial responsibility towards the problematic state in the markets. But it is a massive hit to a company that its first product should be out soon and just until recently was recruiting in a crazy pace.

Launch delays- When the Modu was officially announced the company said that the first devices would hit the market on October 1st, 2008, since then the date changed and it was assumed that we could buy the device on Q1 2009.
Today in an interview Dov Moran, the CEO and Co-founder, said that the device will only be available on April. This statement is actually to say that the launch date was delayed by 6 months.

Operators- At first, Modu announced that three operators will launch the device at the same time, Cellcom (Israel), TIM (Italy), and Vimpelcom (Russia). Time passed and after the first delay of the launch, it seems Cellcom will be the first to launch and TIM and Vimpelcom will come second (meaning they will wait).
This launch resembles what Apple aimed to when launching the first iPhone in the states, but in Apple’s case, that was their strategy and not a misfortune.
It seems that TIM and Vimpelcom are waiting to see if the launch in Israel is successful and will decide only afterwards if and how to deploy.

Advertisement of the launch- Modu sent a request to two major publicity agencies in Israel (with a global ownership) to send them a price quote on the Israeli launch campaign.
That is a bit strange, Cellcom will be the first to launch the device and it is expected that they will worry for the marketing side to their customers with ads and promotions. This step can be interpreted as a lack of commitment / security on Cellcom’s side.

All that being said, Dov Moran is an established business man with a brilliant record from M-Systems and with great connections. Modu still has a large sum of money in their bank and there are many skilled professionals still working in Modu. Bottom line, I hope that Modu Mobile will pass these bumps on the road and leaves as a triumphant from these challenges.

Nowadays mobile services struggle to generate income but maybe the user just asks for more, not a value added service but just to save him some money.
No I am not talking about either Blyk,  Sugarmama or Cellcom’s Zmoney, It is about a new VOIP service called PokeTalk.
Parrot-Media’s new service PokeTalk offers users free calls using their own phone, just write your number and destination and talk for free.
Jajah offers the same service for cheap rates but PokeTalk is absolutely free, while targeted advertising is shown on the screen.
PokeTalk has also a Facebook application, one click and the user can talk for free, one click and Parrot-Media can build the advertisers a complete profile of the user.
In the future Parrot-Media will offer free sms and wake up calls as a return you will watch some ads, understood?

The service is launched for US, UK, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Chanda and Israel users. You can try the service at www.poketalk.com

Cellcom has launched today a new advertising campaign named “Time Is Money” – ZMoney (in Hebrew the word Time is Zman so ZMoney is the combination of time and money).
“Time Is Money” allow subscribers to accumulate free air time (in this case up to 45 minutes).
As for the old saying “nothing is free” the minutes are awarded after watching ads on the computer and answering 1-2 questions.
Advertisers will pay  0.47$ for a proven ad (user that answers the right question after the ad).
Cellcom expects to generate 4.2 million dollars, half of the investment “buying” air time.

The model is just like virgin’s SugerMama that was launched back in 2006 and is doing quite well.
There are 750,000 users and the CTR is standing on 5%, 10 times more than regular internet CTR ( As Scott Kelliher says on MobiAD).
Cellcom’s CEO, Amos Shapira, said that “Cellular phone advertising will happen in the end and it will be big”.
He could not put it in a better way, the mobile advertising did not “happen” yet, “Time Is Money” is a good example why.
Take the internet advertising as an example, the same advertising model exists on it too, rewarding users for watching ads and answering surveys.
The model is alive and generating some millions of dollars but lets put it that way: This is not internet advertising.

If you make an internet advertisement and reward the user with air time…. how is it a mobile advertisement?!
